LAWMAKERS HAVE TILL OCT 31 TO RENEW THEIR NUMBER PLATES - FRSC

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Commission, has fixed October 31 for renewal of number plates for federal lawmakers.
Mr. Oyeyemi said this on Wednesday while addressing journalists during a workshop organised for Heads of Driver’s License Centres of FRSC.

He said clerks of the various legislative arms are expected to apply for the new number plates for legislators which will be valid for four years.
“Official number plates for legislators in Federal and State tiers of government have a four-year lifespan and it is the duty of the legislative Clerk to give and withdraw them.
“The current official number plate for national assembly was issued in 2011 and will expire by the end of October 2015.
“The Clerks of the legislative arms are expected to withdraw the number plates from former legislators and apply for new ones for the current legislators.
“The current (federal legislators) official number plates will expire by the end of October and I have given directive that any vehicle that displays it after next month should be impounded,” he said.
The Corps Marshal also said that vehicles with foreign number plates would not be allowed on Nigerian roads any longer, with exception of those with Diplomatic number plates or valid documents.
“Apart from vehicles with Diplomatic number plates which have the right to do so, it is act of lawlessness for anyone to drive with unpermitted foreign number plates on Nigerian roads.
“Vehicles from neighbouring countries like Ghana and Benin which have warrant across Nigeria, can also move within Nigeria for a maximum of 90 days after which they are expected to register to stay further.
“Anything contrary to that will attract impoundment of such vehicles, as I have given directive that such vehicles should not be allowed on Nigerian roads,” Mr. Oyeyemi said.
Mr. Oyeyemi said the workshop was the fourth of its kind by FRSC this year to increase the capacity of its officers on issuance of effective and secured Driver’s License.
He also said it was in compliance with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive on single biometric administration.
The FRSC boss warned personnel of the service to display competence at all times and desist from any sharp practice, saying the management under his stewardship would not condone such, no matter how little.
“I mince no words in warning that the era of careless compromises are gone.
“FRSC operators must be wary of false declaration by applicants to ensure that licenses do not fall into the wrong hands or used to claim false identity,” he said.
The FRSC and the National Identity Management Commission have been working together to harmonise data following the directive.
