TAMBUWAL AND WAMAKKO ACCEPT SOKOTO NOMINEE AFTER MEETING WITH BUHARI

Buhari in France
President Muhammadu Buhari has met with Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal and former governor of the state, Aliyu Wamakko, to resolve the political standoff sparked in the North-West state by the nomination of Aisha Abubakar as minister.

A statement by Imam Imam, the spokesman for Mr. Tambuwal, said the two Sokoto political leaders “had a fruitful one-hour discussion” with Mr. Buhari on Mrs. Abubakar’s nomination.
Although Mr. Imam only said “at the moment, all issues ‎are being resolved” without elaboration, credible sources told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Buhari persuaded Messrs. Tambuwal and Wamakko to support the ministerial nominee.
Sources however told PREMIUM TIMES that prior to the meeting with the president last night at the Presidential Villa, Mr. Buhari asked the ministerial nominee to see Mr. Tambuwal and seek support.
It was however gathered that some top leaders of the APC were also involved in the lobby for the acceptance of the nominee by the party stakeholders.
Protests had mounted over Mrs. Abubakar’s nomination after critics claim she came from the same zone with the governor and that she allegedly campaigned for the Peoples Democratic Party in the last governorship election.
Last week, the state chairman of the APC, Usman Danmadamin-Isa, told newsmen the decision to reject the nominee was unanimous.
“The meeting discussed the nomination of one lady called Aisha as the nominee from Sokoto state and we have rejected her nomination.
“We have rejected her nomination outright because she is not a card-carrying member of the party in the state and nobody knows her, while she knows nobody in the state.
“We have also resolved to, respectfully, write to President Muhammadu Buhari to replace her with another more competent person,” he said.
On Monday, the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Ethics, Public Petitions and Privileges dismissed a petition filed against Mrs. Abubakar as it was addressed to Mr. Buhari not the president of the Senate as is the rule of the Senate.
