Road Safety Corps marshall, Boboye Oyeyemi
Mr. Oyeyemi made the call at the “Don’t Drink and Drive (DDD)’’ campaign organised by the FRSC in partnership with the Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc in Onitsha on Wednesday.
The Corps Marshal, represented by Angus Ibezim, Corp Commander and Head of Section, said a reduction of alcohol-induced driving would help to reduce the rate of road crashes.
He described the FRSC/NB partnership as a “huge success’’.
Mr. Oyeyemi said there was need for states to make legislation that would prohibit the sale and consumption of alcohol in the various motor parks across the country.
“We are still advocating, sensitising and reaching out to stakeholders to see that the use of alcohol while driving was eliminated.
“But we are going to move further to urge states to make laws that prohibit the sale and consumption of alcohol in motor parks,’’ he said.
In his remark, the State Commissioner of Police, Hassan Karma, said his command would partner with the FRSC to ensure sanity and safety of road users.
Mr. Karma, represented by Philip Ezekiel, Area Commander, Onitsha, urged motorists to be safety conscious while driving and ensure that they did not expose themselves to hoodlums.
The commissioner said the police was putting extra measures in place to frustrate the activities of criminals, adding that Onitsha and Anambra in general remained a zero tolerance zone for criminality.
Earlier, Sunday Ajayi, Sector Commander, FRSC in Anambra, said the command was aware of the critical role Onitsha played in the nation’s road transport sector.
Mr. Ajayi called on stakeholders in road transport to encourage their members to shun drunk driving as it often resulted in “visual impairment, wrong sense of judgment and deadly confidence”.
He said while the command would continue to advocate for decency, it would not relent in punishing offenders according to the law.
