SARAKI NAMES SENATE COMMITTEES HEADS, RIVAL AHMED LAWAN GETS DEFENCE

The Senate President, on Wednesday, announced the composition of 65 standing committees of the upper house with his rival in the contest for the senate presidency last June, Ahmed Lawan, emerging as Chairman of the Defence Committee.

Another opponent of the senate president, Kabiru Marafa, was also named chairman of the Committee on National Population Commission.
Mr. Saraki increased the number of the committees from 57 which his predecessor, David Mark, had.
While senators of the All Progressives Congress got the chairmanship of 41 committees, those of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party got 24.
Mr. Saraki had earlier named chairmen of some special committees, namely – Selection, statutorily chaired by the senate president himself; Rules and Business, Senate Services, Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions and Public Accounts.
He also named some ad-hoc committees.
Mr. Saraki had in July directed each senator to fill forms indicating their interest in the committees they would belong.
“Senators are advised to fill the forms indicating their interest in belonging to the committees of their choice and it is a maximum of five committees per senator,” he had said.
“The forms will be distributed by the Clerk. You can also take a look at the form and make your submissions to the leader of the senate,’’ he said.
Other senators who emerged committee chairmen on Thursday are Dino Melaye, who headed the ad-hoc committee on media and publicity, but will now chair the Committee on Federal Capital Territory; and Oluremi Tinubu, wife of a national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, who will head Committee on Women Affairs and Aliyu Abdullahi as Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs.
