WHY I CANT REVEAL MY SALARY AND SEVERANCE PACKAGE IN PUBLIC - NERC BOSS, SAM AMADI

The Chairman of Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Sam Amadi has stated that it is irresponsible for any public official to reveal how much he earns as emolument.

Mr. Amadi, who recently described himself as an exemplary public servant, made the disclosure Wednesday at a press conference in Abuja.
The NERC boss called the conference to address the issue of the alleged payment of N2.7 as severance package to himself and his commissioners.
They were claims recently that Mr. Amadi and his commissioners whose tenure ends at the end of the year, have approved various sums as severance package for themselves.
It was reported that while Mr. Amadi would receive N400 million, his six commissioners would take home N300 million each.
The Nation newspaper however reported Thursday that when asked how much he earns as salary and how much he would receive in severance package, Mr. Amadi said it would be irresponsible of any chief executive officer to disclose his emolument in public.
He advised reporters to take advantage of the Freedom of Information Act. FOI, if they really want to know how much he earns.
“I have the temptation to say it is X, but it will be irresponsible of me or anybody to disclose it. I don’t know anywhere in the world where chief executives or senior management or commissioners have said on air we earn this.
“Even if you are earning N2,000, you don’t say it. Even in the most developed parts of the world, you don’t say it. What we do is what FoI Act has provided for you. If you want to know, you can put in a request and they will give it to you.
So, if I want to grandstand and say my salary is X, it is totally irresponsible. It is unnecessary. It doesn’t show leadership quality,” he said.
The NERC boss said the commission was presently undergoing public trial over the N2.7 billion severance payments.
As a result of that, he said the NERC website was recently hacked and that a letter was allegedly posted there by hackers to say he (Sam Amadi) asked the commissioner in charge of Finance to transfer funds to him in the United Kingdom.
He said NERC would report the matter to security agencies soon.
