SENATE CONFIRMS DAMBATTA AS CEO OF NIGERIA COMMUNICATION COMMISSION

The Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Umar Dambatta as the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.

Mr. Dambatta, was appointed as acting CEO of NCC by President Muhammadu Buhari on August 4, 2015, following the expiration of the tenure of his predecessor, Eugene Juwah.
Prior to his appointment in August, Mr. Dambatta vice chancellor, Kano State University of Science & Technology, Wudil.
The chairman of the Senate Committee on Communication, Gilbert Nnaji, said Mr. Danbatta, a professor, would occupy the office in the next five years in the first instance.
Born in Dambatta Local Government Area of Kano State, Mr. Dambatta obtained his bachelors degree in Engineering and master’s degrees from the Technical University of Wroclaw in Poland, and his Ph.D from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, UMIST, United Kingdom respectively.
A former lecturer in telecommunications engineering and electronics in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Technology of Bayero University Kano for 28 years, Mr. Dambatta rose to become the Dean of the Faculty and Head of Department.
He also served as the Deputy and Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Administrator of the Works Department and later Director of the Centre for Information Technology, CIT, of the university.
Author of over 50 articles in journals, conference proceedings and technical reports, Mr. Dambatta also published a 167-page book titled: “Element of Static Engineering Electromagnetics.”
A recipient of 18 awards of distinction and certificates of honour, Mr. Dambatta served two terms of five years as a Member of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, as well as a COREN registered engineer and member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE.
He was the Vice President of the Digital Bridge Institute, DBI, International Centre for Advanced Communication Studies, Kano campus, established in 2004 by the NCC, to build capacity for the Nigerian/African telecom industry in the diverse areas of Information and Communication Technology, ICT.
While at DBI, he developed expertise in major areas of ICT implementation policy.
